Too Much Water Or Too Little? Watering Your Garden In A Heat Wave
By Lynne Adkins
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The heat wave continues. Saturday's temperature could be at 100 degrees or above, and your plants are showing signs that they've had enough.
The leaves are wilting and some may be turning brown from the unrelenting heat and sunshine. Most will survive, but you need to help. Tomasz Anisko, the curator of plants at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, says to grab the hose or watering can and get out in the garden every evening.
"And that's particularly important for plants which may have been transplanted recently or plants in containers, because these are the ones with the volume of soil available to them is limited," Anisko says.
Forget the feeding for now, that could just add more stress. And if you can, put planters in the shade or under an awning. Anisko says most plants won't need a drink more than once a day.
