PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- PennDOT wins an award for a huge improvement project that impacted 100,000 drivers a day.
The local chapter of the American Society of Highway Engineers has awarded PennDOT for its $20 million improvement at the Gustine Lake Interchange in Philadelphia. PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum says the project replaced old bridges and ramps connecting City Avenue, Lincoln Drive, Kelly Drive and Ridge Avenue. Now, it's safe and attractive.
"There was extensive landscaping done, all new monorail sign structures were placed, we placed a wider area on Ridge Avenue for SEPTA buses to park, to curb ramps and an aesthetic stone finish was placed on all the bridge walls and columns.
He says the honor is awarded for technical difficulty, as well as the safety, beauty and community improvement provided.
