2015 Casino Numbers For Atlantic City A Mixed Bag
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - 2015 turned out to be a mixed year for the casino business in Atlantic City, according to newly released numbers from the State of New Jersey.
A report from the Division of Gaming Enforcement shows the eight operating casinos, collectively, earned just over $2.5-billion -- 6.5% less than in 2014.
Matt Levinson, chairman of New Jersey's Casino Control Commission, emphasizes the bright side of the ledger:
"When you look at your Tropicana, you look at your Resorts, Harrah's, Golden Nugget, Borgata, all of them, revenue-wise and gaming win wise, were better than they were last year."
In fact, Golden Nugget topped the list with a gain of just under 25-percent for the year.
But Caesar's, Bally's and Trump Taj Mahal were down -- the Taj by more than 16%. All three are in various stages of bankruptcy protection.
There's a lot of talk in Trenton about what to do with Atlantic City. Levinson won't be dragged into that debate:
"I'm not sure of what's going to happen with a North Jersey casino. I'm not sure what is going to happen with a takeover or no takeover of Atlantic City," he said. "But you just need to sit down, do your work and do the best you can."
The casino revenue numbers no longer take into account four casinos that closed down in 2014.
