2013 Contest for NJ's Best Beaches Takes Cooperative Tone After Hurricane Sandy
By Ian Bush
FORT HANCOCK, N.J. (CBS) -- Every year, Jersey shore spots battle it out to be named the state's best beach. But after Hurricane Sandy, this isn't like any other year, so the contest is changing.
Manasquan was among the Top Ten best New Jersey beaches in 2012 -- but that was before the storm devastated its shoreline and those of several other shore communities.
"We're working as a united front instead of a friendly rivalry that the contest has become over the past five years," says Kim Kosko with the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium.
Her group wants fans of the Jersey shore to send in their best beach photos: "images that best represent or best idealize what's memorable and great about the Jersey shore to them."
Noted photographers will sift out the top two dozen; then, there's a public vote.
"They're going to be incorporated into a calendar," Kosco says, with a portion of the sales going to the state's hurricane relief fund.
They are taking submissions until March 22d at njtoptenbeaches.org.
