February's Record Snowfall Nets Philadelphia $1.8 Million In FEMA Aid
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency agrees with the rest of us, last February's record-setting snowfall was a disaster and the agency is awarding Philadelphia almost two million dollars in disaster relief aid.
The 51 inches of snow that fell between February 5th and 10th made 2010 the snowiest winter in Philadelphia and city finance director Rob Dubow says also the costliest.
"The snowstorms that hit us last year really were a disaster. We had a record amount of snowfall that led to a substantial amount of costs," said Dubow.
According to Dubow, the city spent 18-million dollars removing all that snow, money that hadn't been budgeted because it was such a fluke, so the 1.8-million in federal reimbursement is welcome.
Long term forecasts say this year shouldn't be as bad but Dubow isn't taking anything for granted.
"One thing I know I can't do is predict the snow so, just hoping that we don't see anything like last year again."... ever.
