20-Year-Old Gets 40 Years For Fatally Shooting Romantic Rival
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — A Camden resident who fatally shot a romantic rival three years ago when both were high school students has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Twenty-year-old Chance Harmon must serve about 34 years before he becomes eligible for parole. He was convicted last November of murder and weapons charges stemming from the March 2010 death of 16-year-old Anthony Ross.
Camden County prosecutors say Harmon challenged Ross to a fight after learning that they both were involved with the same girl. But Ross, who didn't know the girl was dating Harmon, refused to fight him.
Thirty minutes later, Harmon shot the unarmed Ross seven times on a city street.
Speaking at Friday's sentencing, Ross' mother said her son had dreamed of working in law enforcement, particularly on a SWAT team.
