MARPLE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- A car driving the wrong way resulted in the deaths of two people on the Blue Route in Delaware County early Friday morning.
The accident happened at about 3:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the Blue Route in Marple Township, closing the highway for several hours.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, a gold Oldsmobile Royale was driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes when it struck a green Chevrolet Venture head-on.
While the cars were stopped, both cars were struck by a Mack tractor trailer and a Volvo tractor trailer that were attempting to avoid the crash.
The driver of the Chevrolet Venture, identified by police as 62-year-old Paul R. Wallendorf, and the driver of the Oldsmobile Royale, identified as 50-year-old
Kent Michael Gans, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
William Wallendorf, the victim's nephew said police told him the heartbreaking news early this morning.
Williams says he and Paul both lived in the Delaware City Canal House, but his uncle worked many hours for a courier service - so he hardly saw him.
He thinks Wallendorf may have been making a delivery this morning.
"He worked in several states and got up early, probably worked 12-14 hours a day, five days a week delivering stuff," said William.
Police are investigating the crash and will perform toxicology tests on the wrong-way driver.
The drivers of the tractor trailers were not injured.
