10th Person Killed In Newark, New Jersey In 10 Days
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey's largest city has seen its 10th homicide in 10 days.
A 14-year-old boy was gunned down in the courtyard of Newark's Riverview Terrace housing complex Wednesday.
Police Director Samuel DeMaio says none of the killings are linked, but the shootings weren't random.
Mayor Cory Booker, who is running for U.S. Senate in a special election, on Wednesday announced a new anti-crime initiative.
DeMaio says police will focus on suspects who could be involved in drug activity because at least half of the homicides since last week have involved people in the drug trade.
Booker's Republican opponent, Steve Lonegan, has criticized Booker for not spending enough time in Newark or doing enough to curb crime.
