Robbery Suspect Hospitalized After Police-Involved Shooting In Cobbs Creek

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia Wednesday morning.

Officials say the shooting happened around 6 a.m. on the 100 block of South 61st Street near Walnut.

Police say a pedestrian reported they were robbed at gunpoint by a male suspect while walking to work this morning.

Officers surveyed the area and observed a male fitting the description of the suspect wanted in the robbery.

Authorities say an officer began to pursue the suspect on foot as he attempted to flee the scene.

Police say the suspect started running, then stopped and turned around waiting to ambush the officer who was chasing him.

Officials say officer's partner ordered the suspect to drop his gun multiple times, and when he failed to do so the officer's partner fired once, striking the suspect in the stomach.

Police say the suspect was rushed to Presbyterian Hospital and taken into surgery.

A gun was recovered at the scene.

Authorities say the 47-year-old male victim from the original robbery was taken to the scene and identified the recovered gun as the gun the suspect used while robbing him.

The victim also positively identified the male as the person who robbed him.

Officials say the gun was loaded with six live rounds.

No police officers were injured.
