1 Killed, Several Injured After Multi-Vehicle Crash In Delaware
BEAR, Del. (CBS) -- Police say a woman was killed and several people were injured during a violent multi-vehicle crash in Delaware early Tuesday morning.
The crash happened at about 7:15 a.m. on northbound US Rt. 13 (S. DuPont Highway) at the intersection with Bear Road in Bear.
Delaware State Police say Joseph Keyes, 66, was driving in the northbound direction on US Rt. 13 north of DE Rt.71 at an apparent high rate of speed. He then attempted to swerve his car to the left to avoid striking another vehicle.
Authorities say Keyes' vehicle struck the left rear of the car then sideswiped the left side of another vehicle.
Police say Keyes' vehicle then left the roadway and began traveling northbound in the grass median toward the intersection of Hamburg Road, still at a high rate of speed. His vehicle then re-entered the northbound lanes of US Rt. 13, where it struck the drivers' side of another car.
The impact caused Keyes' vehicle, and the other car struck, into the intersection where they hit another vehicle.
Police say Catherine Keyes, 61, who was a passenger in her husband's vehicle, and who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say Joseph Keyes was transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where he is being treated for his serious injuries.
Three other victims were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Two other involved were not injured.
US Rt. 13 northbound at Hamburg Road was closed for about four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
