1 Injured In Police-Involved Shooting In West Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Investigators say a man is hospitalized following a police-involved shooting Tuesday night.
It happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. in West Philadelphia's Parkside section.
Philadelphia Police say a 19th District officer responded to the 5100 block of Jefferson Street for a report of a person with a gun.
Upon arrival, police say the officer saw the suspect at a mini-market. The officer and several other officers stopped the suspect and began struggling with him.
According to police, the suspect allegedly punched an officer in the face and then pulled a handgun from his right pants pocket. The suspect then allegedly pointed the handgun at the officers, police say.
At that time, one officer discharged his service weapon one time, striking the suspect in the abdomen.
The suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania by police in critical condition.
Police say the suspect's knife and a Taurus 9mm semi-auto handgun was recovered.
The officer who was punched suffered minor injuries to the face. No other injuries to police or civilians were reported.
The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duty pending the investigation by Internal Affairs.
The District Attorney's office will review the investigation upon completion.
