1 Bucks County Fugitive Dead, 1 Nabbed In Cop Shooting in N.C.

SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. (CBS) -- Police say a Bucks County woman is behind bars down South and her male accomplice is dead after they allegedly shot a police officer during a traffic stop on I-95 in North Carolina, near the Virgina border.

Reports say that Renee Phillips (right) and Michael Edgerton, both from Southampton (Bucks County), were discovered in the woods not far from where the officer was shot.  Edgerton was pronounced dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The highway patrol officer, John Taylor, was listed in critical condition at a North Carolina hospital.  According to reports, Phillips and Edgerton were initially stopped for tailgating.  Dashboard video from the police cruiser shows shots being fired at the officer just seconds after he approached their car.

The pair were reportedly declared fugitives a month ago for failing to appear for a court hearing in Bucks County.

Phillips is charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, and accessory after the fact.  Investigators believe the car was stolen from Pennsylvania.
