Winter storm moving out of Philly region: Live updates and more

NEXT Weather: Tracking Thursday's wintry mix 03:51

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It has been a day of rain, snow and a mix of the two, but this massive storm isn't quite done with our area just yet. The system started with a brief wintry mix Thursday morning in the city and suburbs, but it quickly changed to rain.

As the coastal low strengthens and moves up the eastern seaboard, winds are picking up and could gust as high as 50 mph along the coast or over coastal waters.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect through 4 a.m. for that region.

We no longer have a NEXT Weather Alert posted for Friday, since it does look like the worst of the storm will be gone by daybreak but do expect some slowdowns on the roads in the morning with showers and leftover puddles.

Allentown hit by snow, sleet and rain

Snow covers the streets of Allentown 02:38

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Snow started falling in Allentown early Thursday morning. Toward the evening hours, the Lehigh Valley is getting a messy, wintery mix.

Allentown got a bit of everything -- snow, sleet and rain.

The sidewalks were covered in snow, residents took out the shovels for the first time this season and the roads were slushy and slick in spots.

The flakes started falling first around 8:30 a.m. in the Lehigh Valley, then changed over to a wintry mix. The snow started coming down again in the afternoon.

CBS3 saw people walking down 7th Street in the Downtown area braving the elements. A few kids enjoyed the winter weather in a cold but joyful snowball fight.

"It's fun because you get to throw snow and I love snow so it's really, really fun," Donny Wenner said.

On Thursday afternoon, PennDOT and road crews were out and about throwing down salt on some of the icy and slick spots and a couple of trucks lowered down the plows to push the slush to the side of the road.

It's the first storm of the season, and many people enjoyed the snow and cold weather.

"I'm so happy to see this now because I am from the (Dominican Republic) and we don't see this in the DR so this is amazing for me," Ezeqiel Montas said.

"I like it when it's just regular snowing like not icy mixes," Devin Hale said.

Allentown saw at least an inch of snow and slush over the day. It looks nice and peaceful, but, of course, it is a bit slippery on the roads.

Drivers are being told to take their time and be cautious heading into the evening rush.

PennDOT has about 200 trucks out and about throughout the area and they will work through the night until all the roads are safe.

"When you have stuff like this, the rain keeps coming down, so you literally have salted an area, and within an hour or two, it's frozen back up. So we go to keep coming back," Ron Young from PennDOT said.

Winter storm causes flooding in Atlantic City

Flooding concerns in South Jersey 01:38

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Atlantic City continues to see gusty winds and steady rain Thursday as a winter storm continues to push through the region.

According to Fire Chief Scott Evans, the city's primary concern is the wind, with gusts forecasted up to 50 miles per hour.

"We're just asking everybody, 'please secure your decorations, anything that could become a flying projectile,'" Evans said. "Just, please secure it safely to prevent any injuries or property damage."

Davon Brown shared the same concern, which is why she spent Wednesday afternoon tying her decorations down.

"I made sure all my candy canes were stuck down real good," Brown said. "They're holding up pretty good."

In Longport, some roads had standing water along the edges, and Evans said some of Atlantic City's low-lying roads will likely see flooding later Thursday.

"It could depend on the persistence of the winds," Evans said. "We may see more water than we were expecting, but we're watching everything closely."
