"It's a rare experience, but it's not unique, and it seems with climate change and more intense hurricane seasons, it's happening more frequently," one archaeologist said.
Residents in at least four Florida counties were ordered to evacuate from barrier islands, low-lying areas and mobile homes.
Lee County, which encompasses Fort Myers, has recorded an "abnormal increase" in cases as a result of flooding from the storm.

With the death toll rising, FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell said the federal government was ready to help in a huge way.
Ian was expected to weaken Saturday and "dissipate early Sunday," the National Hurricane Center reported.
"We can only pray our crews find them so their families and loved ones can rest," the Coast Guard said.
It could bring a "life-threatening" storm surge to South Carolina, forecasters say. Ian left catastrophic destruction in Florida and is being blamed for at least six deaths there.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials briefed the president on the massive storm Thursday.
It made landfall over southwestern Florida as a major Category 4 hurricane and, while downgraded, was still packing a powerful punch overnight.
A Category 5 hurricane has winds of 157 mph or higher. These are the only four hurricanes in the history of the U.S. that have made landfall at that level.
The storm has already battered Cuba with high winds and life-threatening storm surge, knocking out power to the island.
