Ex-Husband Held In Texas After Murder Of Thornton Woman

LITTLEFIELD, Texas (CBS4) - A man with a history of domestic violence is under arrest after his ex-wife's killing at a Westminster investment office.

Police captured Richard Stewart, 71, in the northwest Texas town of Littlefield, near Lubbock. Officers had pulled him over for driving erratically and he is now being held on a warrant in connection with the Westminster case.

"He stopped the vehicle for a possible DWI and in the course of talking to the driver noticed that he appeared confused and seemed to be having trouble maintaining consciousness. The game warden got a return on the plate number," said Mike Cox with Texas Parks and Wildlife.

That search turned up a warrant for Stewart in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina for assault.

His ex-wife, Norma Dee Stewart, 71, of Thornton, was shot in the head and killed Monday morning at the Edward Jones Investments office at 112th and Federal.

Neighbors remember Norma as an avid gardener and a great neighbor.

"Norma, she was a great person. She was a sweetheart," said neighbor Jason Dubose.

"Everybody liked her, she's a very giving person," said neighbor Lynette Luna.

Norma's nephew said she feared her ex-husband and that their daughter had been living out of state of fear because she also was afraid of him.

Neighbors said Norma had a restraining order against her ex-husband stemming from prior domestic violence.

"He did have some anger issues and toward the end they had some disagreements," said Luna.

Norma was working at Edward Jones when she pushed a panic button, alerting police to come.

Richard Stewart was arrested for domestic violence in 2008. He is wanted in Colorado, North Carolina and Texas.

Police are working on getting Stewart extradited back to Colorado, but he must first be arrested.

Stewart remains hospitalized in Lubbock, Texas in intensive care. A game warden is guarding his room.
