Voters In Colorado's Minority Communities Feel 2020 Election Is A Turning Point

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - The 2020 presidential election may be seen a referendum on racial justice by many in communities of color.

"We're 55 years post the voting act and so it's a big deal to be able to have the right to vote," Simone Ross told CBS4 in Aurora on Tuesday.

Ross, a mom and businesswoman, does not take voting lightly. This year it has taken on a different meaning for her.

"Equity, placing a value on Black and brown lives, placing a value on Black men's lives," she said.

Ross feels like she's fighting some of the same battles as those in the early civil rights movement, including a renewed push to end systemic racism, but also against COVID 19, a virus that has hit minorities much harder. Yet historically, communities of color have not turned out as much as white voters; and there is a debate to why, whether it was because of voter intimidation or suppression.

"It's scary not to feel safe," she said.

The events of this past summer have minorities on both parties realizing their vote counts much more than just for the presidency.

"If the Democrats want to avoid another 2010 in a couple of years then they really should engage with Black and brown community," said Jesse Acevedo, University of Denver Assistant Professor of Political Science.

That year Democrats lost the house. Acevedo looked at data and points out that turnout is likely to be up in marginalized groups.

"Whether it's a close election that tips the balance or an election that pushes the margin even wider, then we should be able to attribute that to Black and brown voters," he explained.

Their turnout may continue as minorities, especially those in Black and brown communities now realize their voices need to be heard.

"This is bigger than red or blue, it's a defining time for who we are as Americans," Ross added.

Both Ross and Acevedo also said it's not just about the turnout for presidential elections, but all elections to make a bigger impact.
