Video Shows 89-Year-Old Driver Going Wrong Way On E-470
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- The E-470 Authority has released video showing an 89-year-old woman driving the wrong way moments before a deadly crash.
The video is from a camera at the toll plaza near Jewell on Sunday night. If you look on the left side of the screen at the video above, you can see the taillights of Odean Wheetley's car driving south in the northbound lanes.
You can also see the headlights of cars she just missed hitting.
A little more than a mile later, near the Quincey exit, Wheatley crashed into the SUV being driven by Grier Laughlin, 37. Both drivers died.
The three children in Laughlin's vehicle sustained minor injuries and have been released from the hospital.
Wheetley's daughter told police her mother often got confused and lost while driving.
In Colorado people over 66 must appear in person for a license renewal unless they provide an eye exam. Their licenses expire every 5 years instead of 10.
