Colorado State Patrol trooper shot, suspect killed in Westminster

A Colorado State Patrol trooper was shot and injured Saturday and a suspect was killed after a driver fired multiple rounds at him.

The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. when the trooper was doing paperwork in the center median and a driver fired multiple shots out of an unknown vehicle.

The incident happened in Westminster and now U.S. 36 is closed in both directions from Federal Boulevard to Sheridan Boulevard and police are asking people to avoid the area.

The trooper was taken to the hospital, where he's recovering, CSP officials say.

Neither the trooper nor the suspect were immediately identified, but the trooper suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The trooper was pulled over in the median of U.S. 36 when another vehicle passed by and the driver fired shots at the trooper, according to CSP. That car stopped in front of the trooper's car, got out and shot several more times at the trooper, who got out of his car with a rifle, shooting and killing the suspect.
