Thornton Police Investigate Deadly Accident Which Killed 5 People

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4)- Thornton police are trying to piece together the events leading up to a deadly accident which left five people dead.

It happened at the intersection of 84th Avenue and Grant after 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said a white Ford Expedition traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Grant crossed the intersection, hit a Mazda and then the median. One person inside the Mazda was hurt.

The SUV became airborne and landed on top of a Chevy S10 pickup. All five people in the pickup were killed.

Police said the Expedition then rolled into a mattress store at the corner. An adult man and woman inside the SUV were hurt, along with two children. The ages of the children are unknown, as the extent of their injuries.

Witnesses told police the SUV was driving erratically as it turned onto Grant from 88th Avenue.

Building inspectors are completing an investigation. It is believed the building is structurally unsound.
