'The Book of Mormon' Will Now Open National Tour In Denver Earlier

DENVER (CBS4) - Denver Center Attractions announced Tuesday that the Tony Award Winning Best Musical "The Book of Mormon" will open its national tour in August, 2012, in Denver, rather than in December as previously announced.

The production will be produced in The Ellie Caulkins Opera House from Aug. 14 until Sept. 2 rather than in the Buell Theatre.

"This is a big move for the show. It has proved so popular in New York that I can only imagine that the producers were anxious to get it out on the road to the rest of America," CBS4 Critic at Large Greg Moody said. "The fact that such a show, such a huge show, is starting in Denver is a true feather-in-the-cap for both the Denver Center and Denver theater audiences.

"Also, moving the show to the slightly smaller Ellie will make ticket demand even greater. The short run and the smaller house will make this one of the toughest tickets in Denver Center history."

"The Book of Mormon" follows two young Mormon missionaries on their year-long mission to Africa. It won nine Tony Awards, Best Musical from the New York Drama Critics Circle, five Drama Desk Awards, four Outer Critics Circle Awards, and the Drama League Award for Best Musical.

Moody, who saw the production on Broadway in New York, says that in true "South Park" fashion, writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with Robert Lopez ("Avenue Q"), have created a rude, raunchy and profane show that remains, at its heart, surprisingly sweet and honest toward religion, belief and the human spirit.

Denver Center 2012 Season subscribers will have the first shot at tickets for the show, beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. by phone only through Denver Center Ticketing at (303) 893-4100. Tickets to the general public will go on sale on a date yet to be announced, but CBS4 has the inside track on letting you know when that will occur.
