Suspect At Large After Cheesman Park Sex Assault

DENVER (CBS) - Police in Denver are looking for the public's help in locating a man who sexually assaulted a jogger.

The incident happened at Cheesman Park on Tuesday evening about 5:30 off Humboldt Street. That's on the west side of the park, just south of the playground.

"A woman was jogging and a man came behind her and groped her and knocked her to the ground. She fought him off and was successful at that," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Since then authorities have been posting crime alerts about it all over the park. The crime alerts provide details about the case and state that there's a $2,000 reward for anyone whose tip leads to an arrest.

"Really scary to think that at 5:30 at night you're not even safe," said Liz Vigliotta, a jogger in the park.

The incident is the second sex assault at the park in recent months. In December, a woman was touched inappropriately and her attacker drew a knife. In this week's attack the woman was approached from behind and inappropriately touched. That woman fought off her attacker and then chased after him.

"You've got to protect yourself, we're not going to say just let yourself be a victim, but be careful -- if you are following (a suspect) be aware that they could turn on you and hurt you. We're fortunate she didn't get hurt worse, but obviously this is traumatic enough, what this individual did go through with the suspect grabbing her," said Jackson.

The suspect was described as being a dark skinned Hispanic or black male who is between 18 and 25 years old. He was well groomed, had dark curly hair and was about 5-foot-8. He weighed about 155 pounds and was wearing a dark grey or black windbreaker and dark pants with three stripes down the side.
