Suncor Reaches Settlement After Sand Creek Contamination
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) - Suncor reached a settlement with the government to replace natural resources lost in a 2011 benzene spill.
The settlement is for the amount of $1.9 million
On Nov. 27, 2011 a citizen observed an oily sheen on the water and oily material on the shoreline near the confluence of Sand Creek and the South Platte River. The Environmental Protection Agency investigated and "discovered oil seeping from the banks of Sand Creek into surface water approximately 200 feet upstream of the confluence of Sand Creek and the South Platte River."
The spill allegedly killed dozens of migratory birds.
Scientists believe the contamination is now contained.
Most of the settlement will go to replacing lost resources.
