Store Helps Out After Colorado Soldier's Home Gets Burglarized

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Police are looking for the criminals who broke into the home of a Colorado soldier serving in Afghanistan.

The incident happened Monday afternoon in southeast Colorado Springs in the Spring Creek subdivision, and left the Infantry member's wife in a fearful state.

Ashley Smith told CBS4 she wasn't home when the crime happened. She says that among the items that were stolen was her laptop, which she says has been her only means by which she could communicate with her husband Patrick during his tour of duty. Ashley and her 10-month-old Caelhan use Skype to talk to Patrick when he's available.

"I felt awful," Smith told CBS4. "He needs to keep his head focused over there and I think he's worried about us."

After CBS4 heard about Smith's story we contacted the owner of a small Denver computer store called Action Computer to see if they could help.

Owner Mark Hope took immediate action.

"We would love have the opportunity to help her," Hope said. "We're going to give her a computer and we're going to set it up for her."

So Ashley and her child came in shopping Thursday and got a hug, plus a free replacement computer and a camera to Skype with.

Ashley lost a lot of other things in the break-in, but she says as long as she can now see and talk to her husband again she'll be okay.

"This will help a lot -- him seeing us and knowing we're okay," she said.

Colorado Springs police are asking that if anyone has information about the crime they should contact them.
