Pilot Killed In Small Plane Crash In Adams County

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4/AP) - A pilot has been killed after authorities say a twin-engine plane crashed near an intersection in the north Denver suburb of Thornton on Wednesday afternoon.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the plane crashed at about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 124th and Quebec streets.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

The pilot was the only person on board the plane.

Authorities said 911 calls came in saying a plane fully engulfed in flames was falling to the ground.

Video of the crash site in a field from Copter4 shows the plane smashed in pieces and scorched earth around it. It was hard to tell what kind of plane crashed.

"Due to the impact of the crash as well as the intense fire conditions obviously that were at place here, much of the aircraft is just simply not in existence," Wendy Forbes with North Metro Fire said.

There were no identifying markers on the plane and the identity of the pilot is also unknown.

The NTSB will investigate the weather conditions at the time of the crash. Witnesses say there were heavy winds at the time of the crash.
