Semi Carrying Flammable Liquid Rolls On I-70

VAIL, Colo. (CBS4) - Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 had to be closed for nearly 8 hours after a semi truck rolled over and spilled flammable liquid.

The rollover happened just before 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon near Vail. The westbound lanes of the interstate were closed at Copper Mountain. They were reopened just before 8:30 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol said the semi's brakes failed and the driver went onto an emergency ramp. That's when the truck rolled over.

The truck was carrying nearly 5,000 gallons of flammable liquid. Some of the liquid was leaking out of the tanker. Hazardous materials crews were on scene cleaning up the mess.

The truck driver was not injured.

There were concerns that water in Vail might not be safe to drink, but officials said it is safe.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said they may need to close the interstate again on Monday for additional cleanup.
