Search To Resume For Missing Yacht With Former CU Professor

DENVER (CBS4) - A yacht missing for nearly two months with seven people aboard, including a former University of Colorado professor, may have been far from where searchers were looking.

The yacht is a 85-year-old schooner called the "Nina." The former CU professor, Evi Nemeth, was with five other Americans and a Brit.

The yacht left New Zealand on May 29. They were headed for Newcastle, Australia. On June 4 they reported hitting bad weather and sent what was apparently their last communication.

The search was called off July 4. Search teams looked in a particular area but now people are questioning whether they were searching in the right area, including Nemeth's son, Lazlso Nemeth.

"The original information that New Zeeland (Rescue Coordination Centre) had placed the vessel further east than it actually was," Lazlso Nemeth said.

Now officials have discovered a text that was sent from the boat but never received. It reported the sails were shredded and the location was far different from the area searched. Now the families of the missing have hired a search firm.
