Pond Would Keep Road Sediment Out Of Fraser River
DENVER (AP) - A new project aims to protect the Fraser River from sand that's applied to Berthoud Pass to improve winter driving conditions.
Denver Water is managing the project and has contributed $90,000. It says the Colorado Water Conservation Board granted $187,900 to the project. Grand County is contributing at least $45,000. The Colorado Department of Transportation is contributing $175,000. Other parties also are helping with the project.
Crews are building a settling pond on the river on the east side of U.S. 40 near the entrance of the Mary Jane ski area and a new wetland area. The settling pond would help trap and remove sediment that enters the Fraser River below Berthoud Pass.
It should be complete this month.
