Police Send Warning, Share Videos That Show Car Thieves In Action

DENVER (CBS4) - According to insurance experts, the rate of car break-ins and thefts has increased 30 percent in Colorado.
With the holiday shopping season set to start on Black Friday, some say the number of thefts could increase.
"We are seeing auto theft go up in Colorado," said Carole Walker, co-chair of Coloradans Against Auto Theft. "Unfortunately, on the top of all the thief's holiday wish list is your vehicle."
Denver police took to Facebook Sunday, urging drivers to secure their cars to avoid thieves.
"(Thieves) are targeting where people are. If you are leaving your car running unattended, if you are leaving a spare key in the vehicle, if you are leaving valuables in your car, that is what thieves are out there looking for," Walker said.
While many may think locking a car is a no-brainer, many have still continued to neglect to do just that.
"It just seems people think 'It is never going to happen to me. I am never going to have my car stolen, or my car broken into,'" Walker said.
Walker said insurance will often handle many car theft situations. However, depending on what is stolen, drivers may have to contact different insurance agencies.
If a vehicle is stolen, Walker said users will have to contact their car insurance provider.
However, if items are stolen from inside a vehicle, homeowner insurance agencies should be called for those claims.
