Police Release Sketch Released Of Attempted Assault Suspect
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Aurora are looking for a man who broke into a house and violently attacked a woman inside.
The police department released a composite sketch of the attacker on Thursday morning.
Police say on July 1 he broke into the home, located near Yosemite and Dayton Streets and Montview Boulevard and E. Colfax Avenue, by taking a locked sliding glass door off its track. He then tried to sexually assault the woman but she was trained in martial arts and fought him off.
"She is a fighter and no doubt about it brave. In this case, she was being violently attacked and fought back," said Aurora Police Detective Bob Friel. "Because she did that is probably why this is an attempted sexual assault and not sexual assault."
The suspect was described as being a black male in his 30s who was between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9. He also had a thin build and braided hair. The victim told police one of the braids stuck out in an unusual way.
"We have to remember that the room was probably dark, she was surprised out of her sleep, the chances of her being able to identify this person to any extent is remarkable, let alone the description she gave, which is excellent," said Friel.
Police are worried the man will attack again.
"The suspect did not bring a weapon with him but because he was driven out of the home and not successful, there is concern that he may bring a weapon the next time he tries this," said Friel.
If you recognize the man pictured in the sketch police ask that you call them immediately at (303) 627-3100. People who wish to remain anonymous can call Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867) or text a tip to: 274637 (CRIMES) then title DMCS & enter your message.
There is a reward of as much as $5,000 for tips leading to an arrest.
"We're trying to determine if this case is related to any other cases, but at this time that doesn't appear to be the case," said Friel. "We are concerned that this individual possesses a significant threat to the community. I don't want to overplay this, but I do believe this is an individual that we all want to see arrested sooner rather than later."
