Police Chase That Started In Wyoming Ends After Suspect Crashes Into Wind Turbine In Colorado
WINDSOR, Colo. (CBS4) — A high-speed chase that started in Wyoming Thursday came to an abrupt end in Windsor, near the Vestas wind turbine plant. Investigators say Frank Lopez, 29, was in a stolen SUV when he drove into Wellington and stole another car from the driveway of a home.
Deputies spotted the newly stolen vehicle and pursued the suspect southbound on Interstate 25. Officials said the suspect left I-25 onto westbound Highway 14 towards Fort Collins and the pursuit was called off for safety reasons.
Deputies monitored the location of the suspect, and began pursuing the stolen vehicle east of Timnath. The pursuit was terminated again for safety as the suspect entered Windsor.
The suspect was located east of Windsor near the Vestas manufacturing facility. The suspect entered Vestas property and crashed into a turbine blade.
The vehicle was wedged under the massive blade, and Lopez started running through the property.
Investigators say the driver got out of the damaged car and ran. After a short foot chase, the suspect was taken into custody.
Investigators say Lopez had multiple felony and misdemeanor warrants out of Boulder County for kidnapping and violating probation.
Lopez now faces addition charges, including vehicle theft and vehicular eluding.
Multiple agencies, including Weld County Sheriff's Office, Larimer County Sheriff's Office, Greeley Police, Windsor Police and the Colorado State Patrol were involved in the pursuit.
