Park Advocates Withdraw Sales Tax Plan

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Parks advocates have withdrawn their request for a sales tax to fund maintenance at area parks.

Supporters of Great Parks-Great Communities wanted voters to approve a cent and a half tax on $10 to raise more than $9 million a year.

The group said the money was needed because parks facilities have been closed, trash uncollected and lawns unwatered.

Advocate Susan Davies told El Paso County commissioners and the Colorado Springs Gazette on Tuesday that parks supporters no longer want the measure on the November ballot. The county would have had to approve the ballot measure and pay for the election and there was no support among elected officials.
