Overnight Downpour Causes Another Round Of Street Flooding
DENVER (CBS4) - A severe storm that passed over the Denver metro area late Tuesday brought an incredible number of lightning strikes and caused some street flooding.
The storm made its first appearance after 9 p.m. and continued through early Wednesday morning.
At one point CBS4's Doppler 4000 radar system counted more than 1,000 lightning strkes in a 15 minute span.
The Denver mayor's office issued a warning to the public during the storm. Residents were urged to avoid rivers, creeks and standing water.
One of the worst areas where streets got flooded was in East Denver at 14th and Jersey. There, a driver was spotted sitting top of his car, waiting for the high water to recede.
Some people there CBS4 talked with said they helped others get safely out of their flooded vehicles. One woman told CBS4 a crew of sports fans who were headed home from a bar helped push her little car out of a flooded part of the street.
Officials closed 46th and York in the area under Interstate 70 because the water was waist deep at one point.
Several sections of Martin Luther King Boulevard were also flooded out between Colorado Boulevard and Quebec.
Water had mostly receded in the flooded areas by 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
