More Manitou Incline Closures Looming

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - One of Colorado's most popular hikes could close again for extensive repairs.

The Manitou Incline is a mile-long hike with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet, but heavy foot traffic and rain have eroded the trail over the years.

Colorado Springs closed it in 2014 to repair the steepest area but city officials say more work needs to be done.

"We did the first in 2014, and that really only repaired about a third of the incline, so we still have about two-thirds to go," Sarah Bryarly with Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation said. "We are still working out the logistics of when that will take place and what that will look like."

Repairs would include installing retention walls and chases for water flow, as well as stabilizing the slopes, according to KKTV in Colorado Springs.

The City of Colorado Springs is now searching for ways to fund the project.
