Mom Sentenced To 12 Years For Stabbing 3-Year-Old Son

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) - A Wheat Ridge woman who stabbed her 3-year-old son in the stomach but blamed the attack on a man was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Friday.

Stephany Mary Harwood, 22, told police that a man she knew attacked her and her son on Aug. 22, 2013, on a greenbelt path near 48th Avenue and Otis Street in Wheat Ridge. Her allegations sparked an intense manhunt, but no suspect was found. She later admitted she stabbed her son and herself in the leg.

Harwood pleaded guilty on Nov. 26, the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office said, to attempted child abuse with serious bodily injury.

The child survived and is doing well, the DA's office said.

During the investigation, police said Harwood told them different stories about the man whom she blamed and said he threatened her and her family. The man Harwood accused does exist, but police determined he was not involved.

A neighbor informed police that Harwood told her on the morning of the attack that she dreamed about a man stabbing her and her son.
