Memorial Day is Monday, May 27. It is the day that traditionally marks the beginning of summer, when the season ushers in tons of festivals and concerts and other big seasonal events. However, it is important not to forget the true meaning of this day. Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, started after the Civil War to pay tribute to the men who were lost during the war. Since then, the day has been set aside to show respect to all the men and women who have died in service. There are many cemeteries that participate in a national remembrance, while there are other veterans organizations that will be holding parades and other tribute events.

For more than 14 years, Denver has held an annual Memorial Day Parade and Tribute Ceremony. The event is designed to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in service for our country. The parade starts at 11:30 a.m. and there will be a Veterans Memorial Tribute following the parade at the Veterans Monument. This is a great event to show your support for all of the troops who gave their lives in service and the perfect way to celebrate this important holiday. Make sure to bring your whole family, this is a great opportunity to spark some discussion for your children on the importance of supporting the troops and American history.

The Bolder Boulder may be one of the best-known races in Colorado. It is always a huge event with more than 50,000 participants racing or cheering on the racers. There are tons of great events associated with the race, and a lot of really fun things to do and see while you are there. However, as the race is always held on Memorial Day weekend, there is also a moving and important tribute held at the end of the race. The Memorial Day Tribute always pays honor to our troops and it is held following the race at Folsom Field. The race itself kicks off at 6:55 a.m. and the Memorial Day tribute at Folsom Field starts at 11:40 a.m.

Every year, Fort Logan Cemetery participates in the national moment of remembrance on Memorial Day, which begins at 3 p.m. If you have never been to Fort Logan Cemetery, then this is your chance to see why this beautiful and important cemetery is known all over the country. There are 17 memorials at Fort Logan Cemetery, spread throughout the 214 acres of land that make up the beautiful grounds. The memorials all commemorate 20th century wars.

Join the Denver Brass for a moving performance dedicated to the men and women that have been lost in battle. It will feature guest artist conductor Lowell Graham, who was the former conductor of the US Air Force Band in Washington, DC. This concert, designed to honor heroes both past and present, will include many of your favorite patriotic songs such as "Hymn to Freedom," "That's America to Me" and many more.

Since 1975, this small stretch of road in Colorado Springs comes alive to commemorate Old Colorado City, which was the first capitol of the Colorado Territory in 1861. For 38 years, this festival has drawn huge crowds on Memorial Day weekend. It's the perfect opportunity to get out, enjoy the summer weather and celebrate both the history of this great state and all the men and women who have fought for this country. More than 80,000 people are expected to attend the three-day festival, which now features more than 180 food, craft and commercial booths, plus plenty of music and entertainment.
