Man Dies While Being Taken Into Custody In Conifer
CONIFER, Colo. (CBS4) - A man has died after being taken into custody by Jefferson County deputies Sunday morning.
Mark Techmeyer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to call about a 55 year-old man who was under the influence of drugs and making suicidal statements on Sunset Trail in Conifer just before 7 a.m.
"The reporting party was the man's brother, who stated the man was wandering around the property and carrying a gun. When the deputies contacted the man they were able to determine the gun he was carrying was a BB gun," Techmeyer said in a statement. "The man refused deputies' instructions to drop the BB gun, and deputies deployed a Taser."
Deputies were able to place the man into custody and began escorting him to a patrol car.
"Deputies determined he was having difficulty breathing. Medical personnel immediately began assessing the man, who subsequently stopped breathing. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased on scene," Techmeyer said
The man's name hasn't been released. The cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
