Juvenile Accused Of Stealing ACT Tests From Cherry Creek High School
GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (CBS4) - A security breach at Cherry Creek High School cancelled ACT testing for hundreds of students on Tuesday.
School officials said somebody broke into the school and stole the tests on Monday. For legal reasons they said they couldn't say if the suspect is a student at the high school or another school in the area. They said the suspect is a juvenile male.
Authorities are trying to figure out how the suspect was in the school just before midnight on Sunday, especially when the school should be locked and has an alarm system.
About 800 juniors were scheduled to take the test Tuesday morning.
"We were told they didn't have the ACTs," a student said.
Only a portion of the tests were taken, but it jeopardized the whole process.
"The area were the tests were stored was an isolated area of the basement and was securely locked. There were tools used to enter that door," Tustin Amole with Cherry Creek Schools said. "We have video surveillance of someone entering the building and then later leaving, carrying some objects in his hand."
Amole said the suspect has been identified.
"We believe right now that there is a single individual who was involved with that and we have identified that individual. It is a juvenile," Amole said.
"We worked really hard to try to study for it and they wanted to do it to get it over with and then it got cancelled," a student said.
Students who were supposed to have most of the day off because of the test received phone calls saying it would be a regular school day.
The junior class tests have been rescheduled for the beginning of May. They will likely be given a different test.
The Greenwood Village police are dealing with the crime as a theft case.
