Gov. Hickenlooper Would Have Accepted Offer To Be Clinton's Running Mate

PHILADELPHIA (CBS4) - Hillary Clinton arrived in Philadelphia on Wednesday where she'll address the Democrats at their convention Thursday night. Vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine was officially nominated Wednesday at the convention. Some had hoped that speech would have been given by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

CBS4 Political Specialist spoke with Hickenlooper on Wednesday and he told her he was he was one of just three finalists for being Clinton's running mate. While he's downplayed his chances in the past, he admitted he wouldn't have turned down the job of vice president of the United States if it was offered.

"There was a sense of disappointment because I'm a competitive person. And once they called me … they didn't call me until six weeks ago … and I couldn't tell anyone," Hickenlooper said. "So people would say, 'What's going on?' And I'd say, 'Well, it's a long list, I think I'm near the bottom.'

"And here I was being interviewed and vetted. But again, one of the greatest honors of my life just to be considered for that kind of a job."

The governor told Politico, an online news site, that it's unlikely he would accept a cabinet position. But that's what he said about being vice president as well.

Hickenlooper was not so well received at an energy panel hosted by Politico during a live webcast. A protester stormed on the stage and confronted the governor over his support of fracking.

Colorado's legalization of recreational marijuana was also getting attention at the Democratic National Convention. A member of the national platform committee is from Bailey, Colorado, and he introduced an amendment supporting the legalization of marijuana nationwide -- and it passed.

"That was a bit of a surprise to me. I understood a few Hillary people that were planning to vote against it had misplaced their clickers. They use little clickers to vote. And so it won by one vote," the committee member said.

He said the amendment passed 81-80, so it is now part of the official platform of the National Democratic Party.
