Hickenlooper To Call Special Legislative Session

DENVER (AP) -- An at times emotional Gov. John Hickenlooper says he's calling Colorado lawmakers into a special session to resolve a civil unions bill that died when House lawmakers halted work over the issue.

Hickenlooper's announcement Wednesday on the final day of the 2012 regular session was sparked by what he called an "overwhelming need" to discuss civil unions. He choked up and cited a call from someone Tuesday night asking when the issue would be resolved.

The bill failed Tuesday after Republican leaders stopped floor work when Democrats in the minority tried to force a vote on the bill. It was one of several that needed to have initial approval before day's end. Lawmakers could take up some of those bills during special session.

A start date has not been set.
