Hickenlooper Order Aims To Address Jobless-Benefit Overpayments

DENVER (Denver Business Journal) - Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order Wednesday aimed at reducing the $160 million in erroneous payments that were made from the state's Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund last year to residents who were ineligible for the money or who were not applying for enough jobs.

Reducing these overpayments will help the state repay a loan it took out from the federal government in order to keep the UITF solvent. And once the fund is solvent again, businesses that have had to pay increasing taxes in order to get money back into the fund should see their state unemployment insurance bills stabilize.
