Hickenlooper Holding Death Penalty Case Meetings
DENVER (AP) — Gov. John Hickenlooper is meeting with lawyers, victims' families and law enforcement about the pending execution of one of three men on Colorado's death row.
Hickenlooper is holding private meetings on Friday and Saturday on the Nathan Dunlap case. Spokesman Eric Brown says he's hearing information from all sides.
Dunlap was sentenced to die for killing four people at a pizza restaurant in 1993. This week a judge ruled he could be executed in late August, although his lawyers are still trying to save his life.
They hope Hickenlooper will grant him clemency. Dunlap's lawyers are also challenging the constitutionality of the death penalty and asking the Colorado Supreme Court to require the corrections department to get public input on its procedure of using lethal injections for executions.
