Grandview High Postpones Prom Due To Impending Storm
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Students who planned to attend the prom at Grandview High School this weekend will have to make other plans. The school district decided to postpone the prom because of the impending storm.
Grandview is in the Cherry Creek School district. The district decided to postpone the prom until May 21 out of concern for the students. The district believes the conditions may be unsafe for students traveling on the roads on Saturday evening.
Grandview released this statement, "As we have continued to communicate with local weather forecasters and other metro area school districts, we have become aware of an increasing likelihood that conditions may be unsafe for students to be on the road tomorrow evening and into the night. With safety being our number one priority, we have made the decision to postpone Prom to May 21st. We believe communicating earlier will give students a better opportunity to reschedule and possibly save some money in expenses for the weekend. We realize that might not be possible in all situations, and we regret any hardship created for students and families.
Due to contractual changes to support the new date, May 21st will still be the date of Prom even if the weather is not as severe tomorrow as predictions indicate."
The prom postponement is one of several events across Colorado impacted by the storm.
Officials with Denver International Airport say the airport was "very busy" on Friday in advance of this weekend's storm.
A winter storm warning is set to go into effect on Saturday morning for the Denver metro area, and some passengers may be hurrying to try to leave the area before the rain and snow set in.
The wait times for the security lines are longer than normal, so officials asked travelers to plan ahead.
Many airlines have enacted travel waivers for passengers who are scheduled to travel this weekend. Those include United, Frontier, Delta and Virgin America.
More than 200 flights with United, Frontier, Southwest and other airlines have been canceled on Saturday due to weather this weekend. Delays may be possible for other flights that haven't been canceled.
In Clear Creek County, the planned closure of westbound lanes of Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower Tunnel was cancelled. The closure was scheduled to begin on Sunday and continue through April 22 for replacement of a damaged barrier. Work has been rescheduled until the conclusion of the storm.
Bustang service along I-70 between Denver and Glenwood Springs with pickups at 5:40 p.m. Friday and Union Station and 6 p.m. Friday at the Denver Federal Center has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions and potential closures of I-70. Saturday morning's route from Glenwood Springs to Denver has also been cancelled.
Earth Day celebrations in Lakewood scheduled for Saturday have been canceled. The celebration included an outdoor festival and electronics recycling event.
An emergency siren test scheduled for Saturday in Weld County has also been canceled.
