GPS Shows Officer's Whereabouts In Alleged Sexual Assault

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4)- New details are revealed in court documents about accusations against a Greeley police officer who was arrested and facing a felony charge for allegedly sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman at a traffic stop March 13.

According to the affidavit, the woman said Officer Daniel Shepherd, 28, fondled her under her bra and underwear in what he said was a search for drugs or weapons.

She had been drinking and said Shepherd implied repeatedly that he might let her go in exchange for sexual favors.

The woman said the officer stopped her along 28th Ave. after he kicked her out of a party. Shepherd had been called to the home because the hosts said she was drunk and unruly.

"What we're alleging is that he then followed her from that party and made contact with her during the vehicle stop," said Greeley Police Chief Jerry Garner.

Shepherd first denied making the traffic stop. It was never logged.

The GPS system in his patrol car confirmed the stop. Shepherd later admitted he stopped the woman, but denied that any sexual contact happened.

Shepherd is charged with sexual assault along with unlawful sexual contact and official oppression for using his position to take advantage of the woman.

"It's hard on the department's image. It's hard on the individual officers, but we're a professional organization. We'll get through this," said Garner.

Shepherd's attorney said Shepherd has been an exemplary officer with an excellent reputation in his three years with the department.

Shepherd was released on $50,000 bond and is on administrative leave. His next court date is April 12.
