Governor Makes Move To Better Protect Colorado Kids

DENVER (CBS4)- Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper announced plans on Thursday to better protect kids by making the state's child welfare program more accountable.

The plan calls for managing the system's performance through a scorecard, improve staff training and making sure more information becomes public when children have contact with social workers.

The governor said we all have a responsibility to help make sure every child in Colorado is safe.

"That every Colorado kid is raised in a safe, secure environment. That they can grow and learn to the best of their potential," said Hickenlooper.

The plan took one year to develop. More details will be worked out before the plan is implemented.

In the past five years, 43 children in Colorado died from abuse or neglect after entering the child welfare system.
