Fort Carson Sends Bulldozers To Fight Wildfire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Fort Carson has provided three bulldozers and 18 soldiers to help clear containment lines around a wildfire threatening the Air Force Academy and northwest Colorado Springs.

Fort Carson officials said Wednesday they also made housing available to families ordered to evacuate the academy.

The school has told about 2,200 people to leave.

Summer classes are going on as scheduled at the academy, and the incoming freshman class of more than 1,000 is still expected to report on Thursday.

The Waldo Canyon fire has burned about 10 acres at the southwest corner of the 28-square-mile campus. No injuries or damage to academy structures have been reported.

No disruptions have been reported at other Colorado Springs military installations, including Peterson and Schriever Air Force bases and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.
