Fireworks Investigated In Cherry Creek State Park Fire

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Fireworks are being investigated as the cause of a fire in Cherry Creek State Park.

Fire crews with South Metro Fire Rescue rushed to douse the flames Wednesday night. They said it was to their benefit that conditions weren't worse.

"If we would have had a little wind this would have been a much bigger problem. So for the 4th of July we're always concerned even with fire bans we still have people with fireworks. The fireworks we think started this were the kind that don't leave the ground but still started this. They were probably over on the sidewalk and they still got into the grass and you can see how fast it spread even without a whole lot of wind," said South Metro Fire Rescue spokesman Dan Stutz.

Fireworks are illegal in Aurora and in Denver and many other communities along the Front Range and Denver metro area.
