Firefighter Gave Ice Pick Back To Man Accused In 90 Minute High-Speed Chase

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - The trial has begun for a man accused of leading authorities on a high-speed chase and seriously injuring a state trooper in the process.

Ryan Cole Stone, 28, is accused of carjacking several people during his metro-area crime spree in March of 2014. Police say he also hit a state trooper along the way. Bellamann Hee ended up with serious injuries, including several broken bones.

The 75-mile chase that crossed over five different counties finally ended in Lone Tree where Stone was taken into custody. The chase went on for 1 1/2 hours during morning rush hour, and speeds exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Prosecutors say Stone not only stole several cars during the chase, but kidnapped a toddler who was in the back of an SUV that he carjacked. The child's mother left the car running and was inside a gas station where the crime spree began.

The jury was picked on Tuesday and the trial has begun. Among the first witnesses was the mother the child who was allegedly kidnapped during the crime spree.

Prosecutors say video of the chase from news helicopters and Hee being seriously injured in the process is their burden of proof.

Stone's defense says, no matter what the video shows, the suspect's intent and mental state need to be known for him to be convicted.

It was revealed in court that Stone got a ride from a fire truck that he approached in the cold the morning of the crime spree. The firefighter who patted him down says he took an ice pick off Stone and gave it back when he dropped him off at the gas station where the carjacking spree began.
