Fire Breaks Out At Aurora Apartment, Kills Toddler

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A toddler died in a fire overnight at an Aurora apartment that authorities say was set by juveniles.

The fire broke out at 71 Newark Street, and flames shot out from the roof.

Fire crews made several searches of the home before they were able to find the 1-year-old's body. EMTs also took two other people to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

"A 1-year-old child was in the room where the fire was and perished as a result of the fire," Cpt. Allen Robnett with the Aurora Fire Department said.

Neighbors gathered outside as firefighters worked to get it under control. One told CBS4 a mother and her three children lived in the house.

Investigators believe juveniles were playing with matches or a lighter in a bedroom.

"It was started with juveniles playing with fire and we want to reiterate to people that it's really important that when you have children in your house to keep fire-setting devices, fire-creating devices, out of their reach in secure areas," Robnett said.
