Feud Between Neighbors Allegedly Led To Shooting

PARKER (CBS4) - One man is in critical condition and another is in jail following a shooting in a quiet Douglas County neighborhood on Monday night.

Police arrested Stephen Barber, 57, on suspicion of shooting his neighbor, Len Chanda, multiple times after an argument.

The area in Parker where the shooting happened is known as the Pinery. Neighbors there said it was well known that the two men didn't get along.

"There was an ongoing feud between the two," said Brett Mealhow, who lives nearby.

Barber and Chanda allegedly fought about their driveways, and on the night of the shooting there was an argument over a fire pit.

"For several years it was ongoing, but I never thought it would lead to this," Laura Lewis, another neighbor, said.

Witnesses say Chanda complained just before the shooting that Barber's fire pit was still smoking and that's when the two began exchanging angry words.

Police also confirmed that Barber's son had recently passed away. Neighbor's say moments before the shots were fired Chandra questioned Barber's parenting skills.

Mealhow said moments before shots rang out one of the men said "You didn't deserve to be a @#$*ing dad."

Autorities say Chanda was foud laying in his driveway with at least four gunshot wounds.

"Around 10 p.m. I heard a lot of arguing, fighting," Lewis said. "Then around 10:05 p.m. I heard gunshots."

Chanda was listed as being in critical condition late Tuesday night at Littleton Hospital.
