Family Claims SUV Driver Didn't Know She Was Dragging Tow Truck Driver

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- The SUV that dragged a tow truck driver to his death was on a list to be repossessed. There are differing accounts as to what happened on Wednesday, when Allen Rose was dragged to his death.

The SUV driver's cousin, Bruce Knight, said she didn't know that Rose was being dragged behind her.

"Her truck was packed to capacity, so she couldn't possibly see out of her rear view mirror," said Knight.

He said she was already in the black Chevy Suburban when the tow truck operator, Rose, was attempting to take it for unlawful parking at the apartment complex.

"As she's going to pull out, the tow driver ran up and hooked the cable to the back of her truck," said Knight.

That is not the story witnesses have told Kathryn Shelton, the manager of the Hill Park Apartments.

Shelton said apartment residents have told her the cable was already hooked to the SUV and connected to the tow truck when the woman ran outside and jumped into the SUV.

"She jumped over the curb, she went through the fan pit over here," said Shelton.

Witnesses said Rose chased the SUV on foot, but at some point, Knight believes the cable snared Rose's legs.

"He steps on the cable. And when he steps on the cable she's pulling out, so the cable was moving like a snake. Because it wasn't a chain, it was a cable, so you've got to understand that it has some stiffness to it. So the cable was whipping like a snake, and it proceeded to wrap around his leg," said Knight.

Police said Rose was dragged about a mile and a half before separating from the cable.

When asked whether the SUV driver saw people waving and trying to get her attention, Knight replied, "She didn't see any of that. She cries all the time about it. She just didn't know the gentleman was being dragged behind her."

Police continue to investigate the incident.
